Privacy Policy

USB Backup never collects, stores, transmits, or shares your photos, videos, or files. They go straight from your device to your USB drive and nowhere else. Period.

Overview

USB Backup ("the App") is a photo and video backup utility for iOS developed by Oscar Salas ("we", "us"). This privacy policy explains how the App handles your data.

We built USB Backup with privacy as a core principle. Your files are transferred directly from your device to your USB drive. They never pass through any server.

Data We Collect

The App sends a small number of anonymous usage notifications to the developer, so we can tell whether the App is actually being used. These are sent when:

The App is opened, or returned to after being in the background for a while
You tap the purchase button, and whether that purchase then completed, was cancelled, or failed
You tap the button that asks iOS to show the review prompt

Each notification includes only: the App version, your device's region (country), the device type (iPhone or iPad) and the iOS version. It contains no account, no advertising identifier, and no device identifier of any kind, so separate notifications cannot be linked to each other or traced back to you.

We do not collect your personal information, your photos or videos, your file names, your backup contents, crash reports, or your location beyond the country setting of your device.

How Those Notifications Are Delivered

These notifications are delivered to the developer through Telegram's messaging API. As with any network request, Telegram's servers necessarily receive your device's IP address in order to deliver the message. We do not store your IP address, and it is not included in the message itself. Telegram's handling of that request is governed by Telegram's privacy policy.

If you would rather send nothing at all, turning off the App's network access in iOS Settings stops these notifications. The App's backup features work entirely offline and are unaffected.

Photo Library Access

The App requests access to your photo library solely to read your photos and videos for backup purposes. Your media files are:

Read directly from your device's photo library
Transferred directly to the USB drive you select
Never uploaded to any server, cloud service, or third party
Never analyzed, scanned, or processed for any purpose other than backup

USB Drive Access

The App uses iOS security-scoped bookmarks to access the USB drive folder you select. This access is:

Granted explicitly by you through the iOS document picker
Limited to the specific folder you choose
Used only for writing backup files and reading the backup manifest

Backup Manifest

The App creates a manifest file (photobackup_manifest.json) on your USB drive to track which files have already been backed up. This file:

Is stored only on your USB drive and optionally cached locally on your device
Contains file metadata (filenames, dates, sizes) but not the actual photo/video content
Is never transmitted to any external service

In-App Purchases

The App offers a one-time in-app purchase processed entirely through Apple's App Store. We do not have access to your payment information. Apple's privacy policy governs the purchase transaction.

Third-Party Services

The App does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking service, and does not use any advertising or tracking identifier. The only external services involved are Apple's StoreKit framework, for processing in-app purchases, and Telegram's messaging API, used solely to deliver the anonymous usage notifications described above.

Data Storage

All app data (settings, backup history) is stored locally on your device using iOS standard storage mechanisms. This data is:

Protected by iOS device encryption
Removed when you delete the App
Never synced to external services

Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The anonymous usage notifications described above contain no identifiers and cannot be used to identify a person of any age.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
